Thakkali bhaji ~ Thakkali Kadayal ~ Tomato Bhaji or any other name you have for it at your home is a simple yet very common recipe among most indian kitchen. This suits dosa/idli and Can be had with chapathi, so its pretty famous across India. Easy to make and a frequent option chosen for idli/dosas along with chutney.

Variations to it:

  • This recipe is a simple recipe with very less oil. There is another version where we fry tomatoes in oil until it gets fried and gets to a thokku/saucy consistency.But we prefer this version as it consumes less oil and is very light.
  • Few recipes include grated jaggery to balance the sour and hot flavour
  • we can add 1 green chilli while sauteing, tastes good. But adjust chilli powder accordingly.

    • Splutter mustard seeds, Pop in urad dal and channa dal
    • Once it changes color, add chopped onions, chopped garlic and curry leaves.
  • Fry for a min and add in chopped tomatoes and fry until slightly mushy.
  • Add salt, turmeric powder and chilli powder.
  • Mix well and little water. Tomato leaves out water, so add very little water while cooking. Pressure cook for 3 -4 whistles.
  • Open and mash it well.
  • ish with coriander leaves.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp urad dal
  • 1 tsp chana dal
  • 1/2 cup chopped onions
  • 4-5 cloves garlic chopped
  • 1 spring curry leaves
  • 2 cups chopped tomatoes
  • 1/8 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2-3/4 tsp chilli powder

Instructions

  • Splutter mustard seeds, Pop in urad dal and chana dal
