Recipe for Oats Pongal

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup rolled oats
  • 1/4 cup moong dal
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp peppercorns
  • 1 sprig curry leaves
  • 2 green chillies, chopped
  • 1/2 inch ginger, chopped
  • 2 tsp cashews, broken
  • Salt to taste

Instructions:

  1. Dry roast the moong dal in a pan on medium heat until they turn slightly golden brown.
  2. Add 3/4 cup of water and pressure cook for 4 whistles.
  3. Open and mash the dal. Set it aside.
  4. In a pan, dry roast oats until nutty smell is released. set it aside.
  5. In a separate pan, heat 1 tbsp of ghee and add peppercorns, cumin seeds, curry leaves, chopped green chili, and chopped ginger and cashews. Fry for a minute until fragrant.
  6. Add 2 cups water and bring it to a boil.
  7. When it is on a rolling boil, add roasted oats and mashed dal.
  8. Close cook until water is absorbed. open and keep mixing on low heat until it comes out non-sticky.
  9. Serve hot with coconut chutney or sambar.
