Banana Flower Kootu ~ Vazhaipoo Kootu
Banana Flower Kootu is a simple, healthy south Indian curry made with Banana flower and moong dal.
Banana flower has so much health benefits especially to ladies that its must have recipe for every women at least once in a while. It is because of the work involved in cleaning the flower; most of the families skip it in their diet. Spending little time on cleaning is valuable for everybody’s health at home.

My mom always makes it at least once a month for me and she gives the innermost part of the flower to eat it raw. It just tastes yumm. During my Childhood days, I keep waiting for her to clean the banana flower, I run to her for the innermost flesh. She reserves it for me! She says it has so much goodness in it and is very essential for healthy women uterus. My Grandma use to give her to eat raw and now she gives it to me. 🙂

Banana Flower Kootu Pictorial directions:
- Heat oil in a cooker, Splutter mustard seeds, cumin seeds and cinnamon
- Put in chopped onions, curry leaves and garlic
- Add grated coconut and mix well. Roast for a minute on medium flame
- When slightly brown, add chopped tomatoes. Sauté until mushy.
- Pinch of turmeric powder and salt goes in.
- Drop in Cleaned and Finely chopped banana flowers.
- Mix well and add moong dal.
- Mix again and add water for the vegetable to get cooked.
- Next, add the Sambar powder according to your spice level. Mix well.
- Close and pressure cook for 3-4 whistles.
- Mash it slightly and serve Hot!

Ingredients
- ¼ tsp mustard seeds
- ¼ tsp cumin seeds
- ½ inch cinnamon
- 1 large onion chopped
- 3-4 garlic cloves
- 1 spring curry leaves
- ½ cup grated coconut
- 1 medium tomato chopped
- ¼ tsp turmeric powder
- Salt to taste
- 2 cups chopped banana flower (1 small-medium sized flower)
- ¼ cup moong dal
- 2 tbsp sambar powder
