Gothambu pidiyum charum | Wheat dumplings in coconut sauce with step by step photos and video recipe. A simple recipe that is common in Kozhikode, Kerala. Pidiyum charum is a breakfast recipe that is usually made with rice flour.
This is neither a sweet nor a salt-based dish. Both sweet and salt will be balanced in this dish. Having excess sauce is our preference. Can reduce the quantity or simmer to a thick consistency.
Consistency and quantity is our preference. I love to have the coconut milk drink (Chaaru) separately after having this. zero oil breakfast recipe. While the routine breakfast like Idli, Wheat dosa, poori, idiyappam, chapathi, upma is so routine and the variation of it makes it worth trying.

Ingredients
To make the dumplings
- 1 cup wheat flour
- 1/3 cup grated coconut
- 2 tbsp country sugar
- salt a pinch
- 1/8 tsp cumin seeds
To make the coconut sauce
- 1 cup water
- 2 tbsp wheat flour
- salt a pinch
- 2 tbsp grated coconut
- 2 tbsp sugar
Other ingredients
- 1/2 cup thick coconut milk
- 1 tbsp grated coconut to garnish
Instructions
to make the dumplings
- In a mixing bowl, mix together wheat flour, grated coconut, country sugar, salt, and cumin seeds.
- Add water little at a time and work to a smooth soft dough
- Make tiny gooseberry sized balls and keep it ready.
Making the coconut sauce
- Make a slurry of 2 tbsp wheat flour and mix it with 1 cup water.
- Further add grated coconut, salt, and sugar. Mix well and let it get heated up.
Cooking the dumplings in sauce
- Drop the prepared balls one at a time slowly into the vessel.
- Let it cook on medium heat until all the balls start floating.
- Put off and add thick coconut milk. Mix once and serve with grated coconut on top.

In a mixing bowl, take wheat flour and grated coconut.
Further add natural country sugar/white sugar, cumin seeds.
Lastly, add salt a pinch, mix once. Add water little at a time and mix it to a dough.
Since we have added country sugar and coconut, it leaves out a little water. So add little flour if the dough is sticky. Make it a smooth dough.
Pinch a tiny portion and roll it to even-sized balls.
Preparing the coconut sauce
In a vessel, take water. Mix wheat flour with little water in a bowl and whisk it smooth.
It has to be lump-free. Pour the wheat flour slurry into the water.
Season with salt. If you want a sweeter dish, skip this. Also, add grated coconut.
Furthermore, add sugar and mix well. Let it get heated up.
Adding balls to the coconut sauce
When you find the liquid getting heated up (NOT BOILING), Drop the balls one by one carefully into the vessel. Mix well and let it cook on medium heat. don’t stir it for the first few seconds. After a minute, stir it and as it gets cooked, you can see the balls start floating up. That is when you need to stop cooking.
Lastly, add thick coconut milk and stir once. sprinkle some grated coconut on top, serve it hot and enjoy!
